Planning A Trip To Gunung Mulu National Park World Heritage Area

The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has designated four World Heritage Sites in Malaysia. As it acts as places of importance to cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.



One of the sites located in Sarawak, which is The Gunung Mulu National Park that obtained the status in 2000. The 52,864-ha park contains seventeen vegetation zones, exhibiting some 3,500 species of vascular plants.



The national park is named after Mount Mulu, the second-highest mountain in Sarawak.

Gunung Mulu National Park is an area of exceptional natural beauty, with striking primary forest, karst terrain, mountains, waterfalls and the largest caves on earth!



Note : This world heritage destination requires advance planning due to its remote location and unpredictable rainforest weather.

How To Get To Gunung Mulu National Park ?



The only way to reach the area is by flight that operated by MASWings, a subsidiary of Malaysian Airlines which offers daily flights to Mulu from Miri, Kuching or Kota Kinabalu.


Fee and Charges


As stated in the Mulu National Park website, all tourists entering the National Park must purchase a 5 day Pass and this pass will provides unlimited entry for the period.

Foreign Adult : RM 30

Foreign Child : RM 10 (6 – 18 years) 5 and below no charge

Malaysian Adult : RM 15

Malaysian Senior : RM 7 (60 years and above)

Malaysian Child : RM 5 (6 – 18 years) 5 and below (free)

* Fees are only for park entry, Tours & Activities fee will be at an additional cost.

Best Time To Visit Gunung Mulu National Park



To avoid disappointment, it is recommended that you should make your booking for accommodation and guides beforehand especially on the peak season in June to September and holiday periods. Do remember, you need to travel by flight to the area!

As the place is remote and isolated, there is no shop, banks or even chemist nearby. So make sure you are well prepared, especially with all essentials that you will need such as proper footwear, raincoat, torchlight, water bottle, insect repellent and more.


Do bring cash, as there is no ATM machine as well!


Activities In Gunung Mulu National Park


When you register at park HQ you'll receive a park map to help you plan your activities. HQ staff are generally helpful in planning itineraries and accommodating special interests.


They are offering; Showcaves, Treks & Trails, Adventure Caving, Extreme Adventures and also Unguided Tour.



Almost all of the caves, walks and treks in Gunung Mulu National Park, visitors must be accompanied by a guide licensed by Sarawak Forestry; the guides are generally supplied by the park or an adventure-tour agency (such as those based in Kuching, Miri or Limbang).
