Started as just a small settlement, Kuching Waterfront has undergone a lot of transformation since the 19th century. Located along the south bank of Sarawak River and the Main Bazaar Road, Kuching Waterfront is said to be the most happening place in Kuching.
During the Brooke era in 1841, Kuching Waterfront is a place where most of the institutional buildings were build and it was well-preserved until today. For instance, there is the Court House, the Astana, Square Tower and Fort Margherita.
In the early days, Kuching Waterfront was a busy maritime port and it used to be a place where people sell sand for construction. As time goes by; a major restoration and land reclamation project were carried out. The Kuching Waterfront (now) is officially opened in 1993. The old markets have all been replaced by the long esplanade and modern additions included.
On the north bank; we can see a picturesque view of the Astana, the Sarawak State Assembly, Fort Margherita and few Malay settlement or kampung. While on the south; the structure and facilities represent a mixture of existing historical buildings and modern facilities such as the Waterfront Square, Hornbill Fountain, the Darul Hana Bridge and musical fountain and lots more.
Since the river play a vital role in shaping Kuching; you must not miss an opportunity to go for a river cruise using the traditional boat or a modern cruise. You may read more about the river cruise here.
