The Kuala Lumpur Police has announced that e-scooters (electric scooters) will be banned on the KL city roads starting 1st January next year. Meanwhile, only gazetted areas are allowed to have e-scooters roaming and non-compliance to the rule will be fined RM300.

E-scooters (electric scooters) to be banned from KL roads starting 1 January 2021
Offenders will be fined RM300; repeat offenders will be fined max. fine of RM1,000 or 3 months imprisonment
Riders only allowed to ride e-scooters at gazetted areas like playgrounds & permitted areas in shopping malls
The decision was made as Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya said that the department have received many complaints from the public on the danger imposed by irresponsible riders of e-scooters on the road.

Starting in January, action could be taken under the Road Transport Act where errant individuals will be fined RM300 and repeat offenders face a maximum fine of RM1,000 or 3 months imprisonment.

Those who insist on using e-scooters on the road for whatever reason are required to apply for a special permission licence from the director-general of the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
